Kelly Services gives students a head start
12 January 2007
Kelly Services’ Townsville Branch has partnered with James Cook University (JCU) to embark on a training scheme to provide practical skills for students studying business and human resources.
Selected students from JCU have participated in the internship program that aims to give them a head start in their careers by providing hands-on experience in a business environment.
Kelly Services’ Townville Branch Manager, Kathy Wilson, said “The internship program is being trialed for permanent inclusion in the student’s curriculum.
“When it comes to finding employment, practical experience in a business environment can make a big difference. Many employers expect that the student has been proactive and gained as much experience as possible while studying”.
The internship program has been supported by Noel Richards, Head of the Business School at JCU, who has been closely monitoring the students and their progression at Kelly Services.
“So far, we have seen outstanding results. One of our first interns Lisa Krasniewicz, who completed a six month part-time internship in 2006, has been appointed a full-time position as a consultant at Kelly Services”, said Ms. Wilson.
Students learn an understanding and appreciation of recruitment in the business culture, gain first-hand experience of recruitment practices and have an opportunity to determine whether recruitment consulting is the career path for them.
The first intern for 2007 is Sarah Fitzpatrick, who is currently studying a Bachelor of Human Resources.
Ms. Wilson said “recruitment is such an important aspect of any business, and learning practical skills and an understanding of recruitment processes will help set these students up for a successful career in almost every industry.
