Practical science scheme to help bridge the skills gap
24 September 2008
A total of 24 science students have been placed into industry work experience by Kelly Scientific Resources through its Future Scientists Program, and many more will take-up positions during December and January, as part of an initiative to tackle skills shortages in the science industry.
The Future Scientists Program’ has grown rapidly since its launch in late 2007. It is helping science students to gain work experience and build relationships between universities and industry by offering career advice, lectures and industry placements for students.
The program aims to encourage students to continue to study and pursue a career in science and create job opportunities to help fill the skills shortage that persists across the science industry.
Director of Kelly Scientific Resources, Anne Sabine, said the initiative is helping to link students with industry.
“The feedback from both universities and industry has cemented our view that a program like this is important in the current skills climate.
“Many students enter a science degree, but the task is to keep them there. This program helps to give students knowledge about the industry, paid work-experience and industry contacts, all factors which will help students to decide on their future and find employment”.
Ms Sabine said the program is set to expand further during the next placement period.
“We have 20 students selected for placements in the next semester break, with the aim of placing a total of 50 students”.
Students have been placed with employers during their university breaks or have gained a one or two day-a-week work during semesters. They have been placed in industry sectors including government, pharmaceutical, food and environmental testing.
Students also gain job application experience during the interview and screening process carried out by Kelly Scientific Resources.
The program is currently underway in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
It is based on a similar US initiative by Kelly Services that has been successful in boosting the number of science graduates in the industry.
